If you have every had a medical provider refuse to draw you labs for hormonal symptoms, they may never have been trained on how to interpret them. They may have drawn standard labs and found they were normal according to traditional ranges. Many hormonal symptoms are vague and overlap with anxiety, depression, fatigue disorders, thyroid disorders and more. It takes a skilled provider trained in women’s midlife health to help tell the difference.
Lab tests for women are conveniently ordered at the location of you choice through Sanford, Avera, or an independent lab station available in Sioux Falls or Brookings.

Hormone labs in Perimenopause
The use of labs values is more complex in perimenopause, when labs can change drastically from day to day. They are most accurate together with a menstrual cycle chart (preferred lab draw cycle day 3-21). However, they can be used as signposts pointing to what is going on, measure progress over time. Labs taken when you are feeling well as a check in can be used to show where your body is used to feeling good and can be referred back to as you progress through perimenopause.
